Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong

It starts in a house about to be firebombed and turns out to be about a girl.

1994

the first cd

EMI split the My Iron Lung EP across two CD singles so that fans would buy both, and this went on the first, between “The Trickster” and “Lozenge of Love”. It was on the 12-inch and the cassette as well. Reviewers picked it and “The Trickster” as the most developed things on either disc.

The EPs came out on 26 September 1994. Thom Yorke told the fanzine Sun Zoom Spark that autumn that the new songs were a little too varied to sit on The Bends, and were there for the people who had bought the earlier records and waited a long time for more. The lyric is lovesick longing to the point of obsession, which the title had already given away. It opens with the singer wrapping someone in his coat as they come to firebomb the house, and the chorus names the danger: a beautiful girl can turn your world into dust.

1994–95

sheffield to denver

Radiohead first played it in Sheffield on 30 September, four days after the release, and kept it through the autumn as far as Amsterdam on 2 December. It came back once the next summer, seventh in the set at the Mercury Cafe in Denver on 13 June 1995, and the archive has it on 10 nights in all.

Colin Greenwood's explanation for why it was played so rarely, kept on the 2003 version of this site, was that he had never properly learned the bass line.
