“Egyptian Song” gets the whole band for the first time in Barcelona

written up for the archive

Radiohead played “Egyptian Song” as a full band for the first time at the Teatre Tívoli in Barcelona on Thursday 15 June, in the encore, with Colin Greenwood on double bass and Thom Yorke at the piano. Yorke and Jonny Greenwood had played it as a duo, still without a title, at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Amsterdam last June.

It was only the second show of the tour. The night before, the open-air date at Vaison-la-Romaine was called off when torrential rain flooded the stage, and in Barcelona it was the equipment that played up. Jonny's keyboard went wrong during the opener, “Talk Show Host”, and “Planet Telex” was abandoned when the sampler failed.

As at Arles, seven unreleased songs were played, though the set had changed. “How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found” had its first performance and “Lurgee” came back. Yorke told the Spanish press that the new material reminds him of David Bowie's Berlin trilogy.

The Tívoli, an ornate seated theatre and the band's only Spanish date of the tour, sold out in five hours with no poster and no press advert, Juan Enrique of the online magazine Indy Rock told Melody Maker. Ed O'Brien called it the least rock'n'roll of venues and the start of the show awkward, and still rated the night immense. The crowd stayed in their seats until the encore, except when Yorke jumped off the stage during “Everything In Its Right Place” and ran along the centre aisle slapping hands.
