Arles hears seven new Radiohead songs on the band's first night back

written up for the archive

Radiohead came back to the stage at the Théâtre Antique in Arles on Tuesday 13 June, and seven of the 21 songs they played had never been heard at a concert. Before “In Limbo” Thom Yorke told the crowd All the new songs will appear tomorrow on the Internet anyway.3 After it he named the song for anyone taping, so they would not get it wrong.

It was the band's first full concert since Amnesty International's human rights night at Paris-Bercy in December 1998. The new album has no title yet, but two nights ago a page went up on radiohead.com with black and white studio photographs of all five, and Yorke signed it off in lower case. record finished. all evidence destroyed. all gaps complete.9

The rain came down hard on the roofless Roman theatre, and the band walked on about half an hour late, at about 10pm, in front of about 2,500 people. Yorke, head shaved, said hello in French, took a photograph of the crowd after the second song and brought in “Karma Police” with a question. You like it dark, don't you?2

Of the new songs, “Knives Out” went down best. Yorke introduced it as a song about cannibalism; it had been heard once before, played acoustic on the band's studio webcast in December. In “Everything In Its Right Place” Jonny Greenwood sampled Yorke's voice live and played it back over and over.

At the start of the encore Yorke photographed the audience again and asked whether they wanted to be on the band's website the next day; by 15 June the pictures were up on Jonny Greenwood's page at radiohead.com. He thanked the crowd for being so nice on the band's first gig back, and “Paranoid Android” closed the night.

Within three days the whole show, all seven new songs included, was on Napster, and a band spokesman said they had expected it.
