“Kid A” and “You And Whose Army?” are heard for the first time at Fréjus

written up for the archive

Radiohead played two songs nobody had heard before, “Kid A” and “You And Whose Army?”, at the Arènes de Fréjus, a Roman arena on the French Riviera, on Saturday night. Just before “Knives Out”, Ed O'Brien told the crowd that England had beaten Germany 1-0 at Euro 2000 that evening with an Alan Shearer goal. Writing his diary from Milan the next day, he thought better of it. bad move this was zidane country and very partisan to boot2 The crowd were great all the same, he wrote, and the show was immense, like Barcelona two nights before.

NME describes “Kid A” as a piano-led piece of about five minutes, mostly without singing. “You And Whose Army?” begins with Thom Yorke alone on acoustic guitar, and the band come in after about three minutes, much as they do in “Exit Music (For A Film)”. Fans at the show told NME that Colin Greenwood played an old double bass on both.

Nine of the 23 songs were unreleased. By NME's count the band have now played 11 new songs on this tour, seven of which were first heard at Arles on 13 June.

The whole Fréjus set is on the internet already, as are most of the new songs, and the Arles show was on Napster within days. The band won't comment on the bootlegs, but at Arles Yorke had told the audience All of the songs will appear on the Internet tomorrow anyway.1
