Thom Yorke mugs for the big screens at Alpine Valley

first posted on Treefingers by Miro · rewritten for the archive

Radiohead played Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, on Saturday, and at the piano Thom Yorke pulled faces for a camera fixed beside it, so that his twisted smiles and raised eyebrows filled the big screens either side of the stage. Away from the piano he shimmied. Jon M. Gilbertson, reviewing the show for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, likens the mugging to John Lennon in 1964.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks opened with 45 minutes in the sunshine. It was dark when Radiohead came on to a close-to-packed amphitheatre with “2+2=5”, three guitars going at full tilt. Two songs in the first encore had alternates written beside them on the setlist, “A Wolf at the Door” for “Myxomatosis” and “How to Disappear Completely” for “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”, and both first choices stood.
