Radiohead take over 6 Music for Christmas, starting with “On the Beach”

BBC 6 Music today aired an acoustic session by Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, “Karma Police” and a cover of Neil Young's “On the Beach”, as Radiohead began five days as the station's first Music Selector. Both songs were recorded specially for it, and Phil Selway and Colin Greenwood were Gideon Coe's guests the same day.
All week the band co-present programmes and choose the music, some of it from the BBC's archive. To make their picks they went through nearly 1,200 pages of listings covering more than 7,000 artists. Yorke is back on Tom Robinson's show on Christmas Eve.
The five have picked tracks for the week as well, and Yorke's run from Bauhaus and Squarepusher to Mahalia Jackson.
Across the week the band also air archive sessions by Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. From 22:00 to midnight, Monday to Thursday, Yorke has chosen every Dream Ticket, his favourite concerts and sessions of the past 30 or 40 years. Tonight's has Joe Strummer, Syd Barrett, Bob Marley and Can.
