Thom Yorke leads Red Rocks in an a cappella “Karma Police”
Radiohead's first encore at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, at Morrison outside Denver, on Tuesday 26 August ended with the crowd singing “Karma Police” on its own. Thom Yorke had started to leave after the song, then stopped, came back to the microphone with a grin and led the whole amphitheatre in it with no band at all.
“There There” opened the show, with Ed O'Brien, Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway starting on a three-way drum part that the rock walls threw back before Colin Greenwood and Yorke came in. The cloudy sky of the start had cleared by the end, about two hours and 24 songs later. Robin A. Rothman, reviewing for Rolling Stone, calls Yorke's voice limited in range but not in feeling.
“Subterranean Homesick Alien” was played for the first time on the American leg, and only the second time on the tour, after Belfast in May. The two encores ran to about 40 minutes, and in the second came “Nude”, the OK Computer-era song that has never been released and went then by its working title, “Big Ideas”. It was not on the written set list, and it had not been played since Salamanca last August.
