Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood drawing makes £1,800 for Free Tibet

first posted on Treefingers by Miro · rewritten for the archive

An untitled drawing by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke, who signs the band's sleeves as Dr Tchock, has made £1,800 for Free Tibet Campaign, three times its £600 guide price. The ink drawing, 22 by 30 inches and signed and sealed, was the first original artwork the pair had ever put up for sale. Donwood has made Radiohead's artwork with Yorke since the My Iron Lung EP.

The sale, The Art of Freedom, was held on 17 March at the Gallery in Foyles on Charing Cross Road in London, after a week in which every lot was on free show there. It raised more than £13,000, and the surprise of the night was a small framed piece by Alan Rickman, which went for £2,100. Free Tibet Campaign calls Radiohead long-term supporters of the Tibetan cause.

Yorke and Donwood made their drawing for the 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who inspired every one of the more than 30 lots. The Chinese authorities took him away in 1995, when he was six.
