Radiohead play Chile for the first time, and open night two with “Creep”

written up for the archive

Radiohead walked on for their second night in Santiago on Friday 27 March and played “Creep” first, the song that had closed the night before. By our setlist records, it is the first time “Creep” has opened a Radiohead set since 1994. The two shows at the Pista Atlética of the Estadio Nacional, billed as the Cristal en Vivo festival with Kraftwerk supporting, were the band's first in Chile. They had been set for the San Carlos de Apoquindo stadium and moved to the athletics track shortly before, because the original venue had no municipal permit.

The first night, on Thursday, started badly, Cooperativa reported. More than 26,000 people saw the band open at 9.01pm with “15 Step” and “Airbag”, but the crowd away from the front was lukewarm and Thom Yorke lost his temper early on. Minutes after playing “There There”, the band struck it up again by mistake. “Nude” turned the night round. Later “The Gloaming” came in a remixed form, and a snatch of “True Love Waits” led into “Everything in Its Right Place”. “Creep” closed a set of two hours and 22 minutes.

Friday brought seven songs Thursday had not had, from “Climbing Up the Walls” and “Exit Music (for a Film)” to the In Rainbows B-side “Go Slowly”. Juan Ignacio Cornejo of Rockaxis, who had found Thursday flat, calls the second night the one everyone had been waiting for, in front of a crowd he puts at over 25,000. For him “Climbing Up the Walls” was the high point of the visit. He writes that Ed O'Brien's backing vocals, too quiet on Thursday, were fixed. In the closing “Paranoid Android” O'Brien took out his in-ear monitor to sing along with the crowd.
