Radiohead return to Brisbane for the first time since 1998

Radiohead were back in Brisbane on Friday 9 November for the first time since February 1998, playing the Entertainment Centre on the first Australian night of the tour. Thom Yorke brought in “Staircase” as a new song, telling the crowd the band play new songs so that they don't go mad.

The band's last Australian visit, in April 2004, had not come to Brisbane at all. This one began three nights after the Auckland opener, with Sydney and Melbourne still to come, and the arena was sold out down to a last, very small batch of tickets the promoter, Chugg Entertainment, put on sale two days before.

A Music Feeds writer blogged the night from the opening “Lotus Flower”, at about ten to nine. “The Daily Mail” began with Yorke alone at the piano before the band came in, and a recording of a spoken interview, playing in the background, led into “Climbing Up the Walls”. At one point Yorke's face was split across 18 of the screens over the stage. In the first encore the whole arena sang “Paranoid Android”.

After the second encore Yorke took a bow and the band left, but the house lights stayed down and the music kept playing. They came back a third time, just before 11pm, for “Idioteque” alone, Yorke leaping about the stage as it ran long.
