Jonny Greenwood closes Radiohead's first encore in Mansfield alone at his pedals

At the Comcast Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts, on 29 May, Radiohead's first encore ended with Jonny Greenwood on his own. As “Everything In Its Right Place” ran on, the others walked off one at a time and left him on his knees at the pedals, stretching the sound out.

Nick Tavares, who reviewed the show for the music site Static and Feedback, put the crowd at more than 20,000 on a hot evening, at a venue his page still calls Great Woods. Caribou opened. None of the singles from the mid-1990s were played, and “Lucky” and “Airbag” were the only songs from OK Computer. Tavares saw a band doing exactly what it wanted, calm and at ease, a long way from the band in Meeting People Is Easy, the 1998 film of their OK Computer tour.

Tavares picked out “The Daily Mail”, which he rated among the catchiest things the band had written in a decade, and “Give Up the Ghost”, carried by Thom Yorke's looped voice and an acoustic guitar.

Greenwood spent the night moving between keyboards, guitars, laptops, pedals and drums. He played his Telecaster with a bow in “Pyramid Song”, and in “Reckoner” kept a shaker going in one hand while working his guitar through a synthesiser with the other.
