Radiohead back at number one as A Moon Shaped Pool reaches the shops

cover
Cover: Stanley Donwood, XL RecordingsA Moon Shaped Pool is number one on the UK Official Albums Chart again, a week after it went on sale on CD and vinyl on Friday 17 June. It is the album's second week at the top after its first in May, when it was sold only as a download, and only Adele and Drake have taken an album back to number one this year. Of its 44,000 chart sales, 39,000 were on CD or vinyl, and its 10,500 vinyl copies made it the week's best-selling vinyl record. Red Hot Chili Peppers' The Getaway came in at number two on 40,000.
Not every copy sold as white vinyl is white. XL Recordings, the band's label, says some sleeves stickered on the front as the limited white pressing hold ordinary black records. XL blames the plant, says a few of its own boxes were marked wrongly too, and has no white copies left to swap. The barcode on the back of the sleeve is right, and tells the two apart before the shrink-wrap comes off: 634904079000 for white, 634904079017 for black. The Fire Note warns anyone buying second-hand on eBay to check it.
On release day record shops around the world, many of them in Britain, played an all-day stream from the band that could be heard only in the shops taking part. The band had announced it the week before, promising competitions, instructional artworks and more
8. In Istanbul that evening a group of men attacked the listening party at the Velvet IndieGround shop.
The CD and vinyl come with a booklet by Stanley Donwood, the band's art director, called How To Make Your Own 'A Moon Shaped Pool Artwork' In 66 Easy Steps, drawn from his own work on the sleeve. Donwood calls it an inconsequential pamphlet
3. Have an idea. Try it. It's rubbish, isn't it?
