“Beautiful People” film gives an actor Thom Yorke's scanned head

written up for the archive

Michał Marczak's film for “Beautiful People”, Mark Pritchard's track with Thom Yorke singing, went online through the Guardian on 1 September. Yorke was never on the set.

Marczak, a Polish film-maker working with Pulse Films, shot an actor walking the Izera mountains in Poland, and filmed Yorke separately with a 3D scanner in Yorke's home town in England. We later replaced the on set actors head with an organic feeling particle simulation of Thom's performance.6 On screen the figure walks alone through misty mountains, and the Guardian took him for a hologram.

The film had its first screening at Sundance NEXT FEST, held at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles in mid-August. Pritchard released the track in March, and it is on Under the Sun, his album for Warp, out since May.

Marczak says he wanted a mysterious figure on a slow, roundabout walk through country that looks like another world and sits with the album's cover art. The film shows only part of anything, and leaves the viewer to finish the picture.
