Radiohead pick a fan's fractal film as the last vignette
Radiohead named a film by Tim Urlacher, who works as Affinitia, the winner of their “Daydreaming” vignette competition on Instagram on Monday 12 September. Finally, the winner of the vignette competition, thankyou to everyone who took part. Our favourite is from @Affinitia.
3 Thom Yorke congratulated him on Twitter the same day and called the film extraordinary.
Entrants made their films to an alternative take of “Daydreaming” that the band put out in July, and posted them under #rhvignette until entries closed on 30 July (the call for entries has the rules). From 3 September the band shared some of the shortlist, starting with @adriendezalay's red-lit street, where a man rises off the ground, and @moonjam3d's field of real reeds with animated shapes climbing out of it. The winner closes the run of short films the band have posted on Instagram since May, each by a different artist for a part of the album.
Urlacher's film is a bright, kaleidoscopic ride through a bent and blocky city, and the camera never settles. He built it in Mandelbulb 3D, free software for drawing fractals in three dimensions, in about a week. Second place went to Sam Munnings Animation.
