Radiohead release Paul Thomas Anderson's film of “Present Tense”
Radiohead put out a film of “Present Tense” on Thursday 15 September, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who made the “Daydreaming” film in May. It is the third film from A Moon Shaped Pool, after “Burn the Witch” and “Daydreaming”. Only Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are in it, playing the song with a Roland CR-78, a vintage drum machine. It plays more like a live take than a music video. The light is low, and the camera moves between close-ups of Yorke's face and wider shots of the two of them together.
The Spanish-language sites Efe Eme and Radionica say Anderson shot it on 3 August in Tarzana, in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, the day before the first of the band's two nights at the Shrine Auditorium.
A Moon Shaped Pool was on the Mercury Prize shortlist, and the ceremony at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith was the same night. Radiohead stayed away, and the film was shown where their live performance would have been; they and Anohni were the only nominees who did not play in person.
