Radiohead headline the Friday of Lollapalooza's 25th in Grant Park

Radiohead headlined the Friday night of Lollapalooza in Grant Park, Chicago, on 29 July, coming on just after 8pm with “Burn the Witch” and playing 24 songs in a little over two hours. Thom Yorke barely spoke. He introduced “My Iron Lung” by telling the field It's good to be angry sometimes⁹, and the crowd sang along to it and to “Climbing Up the Walls” straight after. Near the end he thanked the crowd and wished them a good weekend. Don't mix your drugs. Have a good time.⁸

The festival turned 25 this year and ran over four days for the first time, 28 to 31 July, with more than 170 acts. Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the Saturday and LCD Soundsystem the Sunday, and J. Cole and Lana Del Rey topped the Thursday. Radiohead had played Lollapalooza once before, in Grant Park in 2008.

The staging was spare. Six screens hung on each side of the stage and six more in a row across the middle, dark for long stretches, each carrying a blurred close shot of one player, such as Yorke's face in profile, Phil Selway's left hand or the pickguard of Ed O'Brien's guitar. Clive Deamer played second drums beside Selway. Jonny Greenwood appeared to bow his guitar during “Pyramid Song”, and for “There There” O'Brien joined Selway and Greenwood on toms.
