Flea and Joey Waronker join Thom Yorke on stage in Los Angeles

written up for the archive

By OC Weekly's account, Flea spent most of Thom Yorke's first night at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, on Wednesday 19 December, dancing in a private balcony in a red hat. In the first encore he walked on stage with Joey Waronker, and with Yorke and Nigel Godrich they played “Atoms for Peace”, the song from The Eraser that gave their band its name. Only the percussionist Mauro Refosco was missing from the original five. Music Feeds called it the band's first live performance since the Amok tour ended in 2013.

The guests stayed for “Default”, another song from Amok, and most of the seated hall got to its feet. They were back on Thursday 20 December, Flea on bass and Waronker on a small drum kit, and “Default” closed the first encore again. Buzzbands.la has photographs from the Orpheum.

Otherwise the two nights on this leg of the Tomorrow's Modern Boxes tour ran almost the same set. The first change came in the first encore, where the new song “The Axe” made way on the Thursday for another new one, “I Am a Very Rude Person”, which Yorke introduced to the crowd. We're doing a lot of new songs because that's kind of why we started doing this.5

Yorke came back alone for a second encore. On the Wednesday he asked the crowd to vote for him, without saying what for (Can you vote for me and shit6), and played “Unmade” from his Suspiria score at the piano, just before midnight. On the Thursday, when many in the hall expected “Unmade” again, he played “Suspirium” from the same score instead.
