Ed O'Brien says Radiohead have talked on Zoom about Kid A at 20

written up for the archive

Radiohead have been talking about how to mark 20 years of Kid A and Amnesiac, Ed O'Brien says, though nothing is settled and the coronavirus has thrown everything up in the air. He told Andrew Trendell of NME, in a video-call interview published on 14 April, that the band hold online meetings and had a Zoom call recently, but he could reveal nothing. He is thankful the record was a moment and knows what it means to people. It would be nice to honour it, but then there's the struggle – how can you get that excited about an album that came out 20 years ago? I can't.2

He divides the band's life into chapters: one up to the end of OK Computer, another from Kid A to A Moon Shaped Pool. We've sort of drawn a line now and are wondering what the next chapter will be.2 For the foreseeable future each of them is doing his own thing, and they will come back to Radiohead when it feels right.

A week later, speaking by phone from his home in Wales to Andy Greene of Rolling Stone, he said there is no timeline for the next album. Thom Yorke is busy touring and releasing music, Jonny Greenwood too, and Phil Selway has his next album coming next year. After 35 years the band no longer work together the way they did 10 or 20 years ago. There are no contracts to fulfil and no lifestyle to keep up, so they will make a record when they are inspired to.

Asked about a box set for the anniversary, he answered “maybe yes”. The OK Computer reissue was worth doing because it had tracks nobody had heard, he said, but anything new has to be good. There is no shortage of tape. OK Computer used perhaps 19 reels, and the later sessions went much further because the band were experimenting as they tried to find their way. I think we got through about 80 reels of two-inch tape for Kid A and Amnesiac.3 Whether any of the unheard material is any good, he has no idea; it is not his department.
