Jonny Greenwood loses the BAFTA for score to Göransson's Sinners

Ludwig Göransson won Original Score at the BAFTA Film Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday 22 February for Sinners, beating Jonny Greenwood's score for One Battle After Another. It is Greenwood's fourth BAFTA nomination for a film score and his fourth defeat. There Will Be Blood lost to Christopher Gunning's La Vie en Rose in February 2008, and Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog went the same way in 2018 and 2022.

It is also the fourth time this season that Sinners has beaten him. Göransson's score had already won at the Critics' Choice Awards on 5 January, the Golden Globes on 11 January and the Society of Composers and Lyricists awards on 6 February.

One Battle After Another went in with 14 nominations, more than any other film, and won six: Best Film, Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, and Supporting Actor for Sean Penn. Sinners, nominated 13 times, won three, adding Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler and Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku to the score.

BAFTA's music chapter cut 112 submitted films to a longlist of ten in January and then voted for the five nominees, leaving out Daniel Lopatin's Marty Supreme and Young Fathers' 28 Years Later. The same five scores are up for Best Original Score at the Oscars on 15 March, so Greenwood and Göransson meet once more.
