Jonny Greenwood loses to Sinners for a third time, at the SCL Awards

written up for the archive

Ludwig Göransson's score for Sinners beat Jonny Greenwood's One Battle After Another for the studio-film prize at the seventh Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards in Los Angeles on 6 February, the third time in five weeks Göransson has finished ahead of him. Greenwood's Oscar and BAFTA nights are still to come.

The SCL field at the Skirball Cultural Center also had Alexandre Desplat for Frankenstein, Max Richter for Hamnet, Jerskin Fendrix for Bugonia, and Stephen Schwartz and John Powell for Wicked: For Good. Göransson went home with two more awards, the drama song prize for “I Lied to You”, shared with Raphael Saadiq, and the society's Spirit of Collaboration award with the director Ryan Coogler.

The film itself has done better, with Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards on 4 January and four Golden Globes a week later, from a field-leading nine nominations. The Critics Choice score nomination was Greenwood's sixth there, and There Will Be Blood is still his only win.

At the Golden Globes the score award was not even on television. It was handed out in the room at the Beverly Hilton and cut from the CBS broadcast for time, a decision Hans Zimmer, another nominee in the category, called a little bit ignorant6.
