Radiohead's Kid A comes third in the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll

written up for the archive

Kid A has finished third in the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics' poll of 2000, published in the issue of 14 to 20 February. OutKast's Stankonia won. Second place went to PJ Harvey's Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea, on which Thom Yorke sings a duet with Harvey, “This Mess We're In”. The two records were named by 155 voters each, and Harvey's finished 34 points ahead, with 1,764 to 1,730. The poll drew 586 critics, the most it has ever had.

In Buenos Aires on 28 December, No, the youth supplement of the daily Página/12, made Kid A its international record of the year, with a track-by-track piece by Pablo Plotkin and Roque Casciero. Seven of the Argentine musicians it asked for their year chose Kid A as their international record too, Adrián Dargelos of Babasónicos, Pepe Céspedes of Bersuit and Fernando Ruiz Díaz of Catupecu Machu among them.

Phoenix New Times opened its Critical Mass 2000 package the same day with a mock list, assembled by formula to send up critics' habits, and put Kid A at the top of it. Two of its critics then ranked the record third in earnest. Fred Mills says the band can carry its sound onto a stage, as their Saturday Night Live appearance showed. Serene Dominic, after two months with the record, still could not decide whether Kid A was art or rubbish, and settles on calling it a put-on, which in his view is what most avant-garde records are.

The Hartford Courant put Kid A first on 4 January, ahead of U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind and Stankonia. Its unsigned critic writes that Yorke and the band all but threw out the guitar after OK Computer, and that Kid A was Radiohead's first number one album in America. Listeners it left cold, who said the critics were following the pack or in on a conspiracy, get short shrift.

James E. Laczkowski, who calls himself Radiohead's biggest fan on the planet, put Kid A third of his ten albums of 2000 in The Chronicle, Purdue University Calumet's student paper, on 22 January, behind Björk's Selmasongs and Eminem.
