Radiohead take requests on their last night in Salamanca
Radiohead took requests from the crowd at the last show of their summer run, at the Palacio de Congresos in Salamanca on Wednesday, and played the unreleased “Nude” under its old name, “Big Ideas”, then “Man of War” as “Big Boots”, a song they had not played since 1995.
It started at the end of “I Might Be Wrong”, when Thom Yorke sang the line he uses to signal a stop and carried on that the band should stop and take requests. The hall shouted titles back. Someone asked for “Let Down”; Yorke turned to the others, and the answer was a firm no. They played “Thief”, the Can song from their 2000 tent tour, and “You”, from Pablo Honey. Fans near the front had brought signs reading “Big Ideas”, and Jonny Greenwood spotted them and showed Yorke, who liked the idea. After some talk on stage about how to play it and which guitar to use, the band played “Nude” under that name, false start and all, and “Big Boots” followed.
The band went back to the setlist with “Exit Music (for a Film)”, which Yorke introduced with thanks to the hardcore officianados who were here for the whole tour. We really appreciate that
1. After “A Punchup at a Wedding” he stayed at the piano and, unplanned, played “Fog” alone while the others listened. He told the crowd it was the last show and ended it with “Karma Police”, which the hall sang.
Salamanca is a European Capital of Culture this year, and its programme brought the band to a hall of about a thousand people for three nights, the end of a run through Portugal and Spain that took in three at the Kursaal in San Sebastian last week. Next the band go to Los Angeles to record the new album in September.
Juan De Bonrostro, reviewing Monday's show for Muzikalia, found the hall packed, with Jonny and Ed O'Brien opening “There There” on percussion. On Tuesday the band played “I Am a Wicked Child” at a concert for the first time, with Jonny on maracas and harmonica; until now it had been heard only on a webcast from the studio in 2000. Yorke dedicated the last song that night, “The Tourist”, to Tim Greaves, the band's tour manager of many years, who is leaving, and the hall went quiet.
