Radiohead return to Detroit for the first time since 2012
Radiohead played Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Sunday 22 July, only their second show in the area in 20 years, after the Palace of Auburn Hills in 2012. Adam Graham of The Detroit News timed it at 130 minutes and counted five songs each from Hail to the Thief and In Rainbows. It opened with “Daydreaming” under two mirror balls.
Jonny Greenwood played bass with Shye Ben Tzur and the Rajasthan Express in the support set. In Radiohead's he played piano in “Daydreaming”, glockenspiel in “No Surprises” and moved to a third drum kit for “Bloom”. Jeff Elbel, reviewing for The Big Takeover, could not hear Greenwood's guitar in “The Bends”. One fan launched balloons during “Airbag”, and the crowd cheered the line about the government in “No Surprises”.
Before “The Daily Mail” Thom Yorke told the crowd about the newspaper and asked whether America had one like it, and at the piano during the song he looked over his shoulder for applause. There was no “Creep”; the cheers went to “Bodysnatchers” and “2 + 2 = 5”.
The second encore ended on “Karma Police”. The audience took the last chorus, and Yorke stayed at the edge of the stage with his acoustic guitar, strumming a few more rounds of it before he waved goodbye.
