John Leckie talks through The Bends at the British Library, 30 years on

written up for the archive

John Leckie, who produced The Bends, was on stage at the British Library on 13 March, 30 years to the day after the album came out, for an evening put on by Classic Album Sundays. Interviewed by the series' founder, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, he went through the recording of every track and talked about working with Jonny, Phil, Ed, Colin and Thom, What Hi-Fi?'s writer reports from the room.

Tickets went for the Library's Pigott Theatre and for watching online, and the evening sold out. After the talk, and before questions from the floor, the record was played from start to finish on vinyl without a break. It came through Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series speakers, the range used at Abbey Road on The Bends.
