Lynne Ramsay lines up Jonny Greenwood for her Alaska film Polaris

Lynne Ramsay has told The Saturday Paper that Jonny Greenwood has read the script for Polaris, her planned film with Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, set in Alaska in 1910. I really love that script – Jonny Greenwood read it and said he could feel the cold, so that’s gonna make life easy.²

Phoenix and Mara were first named for Polaris in June 2021, when Ramsay talked about it at Cinema Jove, the Valencia film festival, and called it an original idea.

She was talking to Andy Hazel for the paper's edition of 25 October, ahead of the release of Die My Love. She calls Polaris a real passion project, and says she has two scripts with the green light, one ready and the other a draft away.

It would be their third film together. Greenwood scored We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) and You Were Never Really Here (2017), the two Ramsay made before Die My Love, and Phoenix starred in the second.
