Jonny Greenwood makes the Oscar score shortlist for One Battle After Another
Jonny Greenwood's score for Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another is one of 20 on the Academy's Best Original Score shortlist, announced on 16 December. Nominations are announced on 22 January and the ceremony is on 15 March.
Ludwig Göransson (Sinners), Max Richter (Hamnet) and Alexandre Desplat (Frankenstein) are on the list too, as they were when the Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globes nominated Greenwood earlier in the month.
The Chicago and Seattle critics have already given Greenwood their score prize outright, and in Chicago the film took nine awards, the most any film has won from the association.
It is his sixth score for an Anderson film on Nonesuch. The London Contemporary Orchestra plays 18 new pieces, and Greenwood plays piano, guitar, bass, percussion and the ondes Martenot, an early electronic instrument.
He has been nominated for the score Oscar twice before, for Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog, and lost both times. There Will Be Blood, the score most expected to win, was ruled ineligible in 2008 because it reused music he had written earlier.
