Radiohead take “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” to number five
“Street Spirit (Fade Out)” went into the chart of 28 January at number five, Radiohead's highest British placing yet and two better than “Creep” managed in 1993. On Thursday, in its week at five, the band mimed it on Top of the Pops.
Parlophone released the single, the last song on The Bends, in the week of 22 January. It was the week's second-highest new entry, behind the Bluetones' “Slight Return” at number two.
The video cost the band two nights' sleep in the middle of an American tour. Jonathan Glazer shot it in October, in the days between the Warfield in San Francisco and the last Soul Asylum support date in Las Vegas, with a Photosonics camera built for ultra-slow-motion scientific work. Colin Greenwood told the fans about it in the October newsletter) from W.A.S.T.E., the band's mail-order and fan club.
we shot a video for Street Spirit, which involved staying up from 6pm to 7am for two nights
