Radiohead finish 29 nights across Europe in Aberdeen

written up for the archive

Radiohead played the last night of their autumn tour of Europe at the Exhibition and Conference Centre in Aberdeen on Thursday, 29 shows after they opened at the Zénith in Lille on 12 October.

In Bonn, Oslo and Offenbach, Thom Yorke came back alone for the second encore and played “Motion Picture Soundtrack”, a song not yet on any record, in an early form with a third verse and a second chorus. In Copenhagen the second encore brought “Pearly*”, the first time it appears in our setlists.

Of the 27 nights whose setlists survive, 13 songs were played at every one, “Creep”, “Paranoid Android”, “Karma Police”, “Exit Music (For a Film)” and “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” among them. “Let Down” came out 20 times and “High and Dry” only eight.

“The Trickster” made its first appearance of the tour in Lille and came back in Rotterdam and Brussels. “Bishop's Robes” was played in Marseille, Toulouse and Berlin. Munich got a third encore with R.E.M.'s “So. Central Rain”. In Hanover the band covered Tim Buckley's “Sing a Song for You”.

Sparklehorse, Mark Linkous's band, opened for Radiohead at Le Zénith in Paris. At Wembley Arena on Sunday the bill had Teenage Fanclub and DJ Shadow.

On 29 October the band played the Vox club in Nonantola, near Modena. Before that show, with Select's John Harris looking on, Yorke tried out an unfinished song) he called “Life in a Glass House”.
