Hail to the Thief tops the UK chart and sells 300,000 in America
Radiohead's Hail to the Thief went straight in at number one on the UK album chart of 15 June, ahead of the Stereophonics and Annie Lennox. It is their fourth number one album in a row, after OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac. Two days into the week it had already sold more than 60,000 copies in Britain, more than the rest of the top five put together.
HMV's chart spokesman, Gennaro Castaldo, put the early sales down to how many people still follow Radiohead. There's a degree of compulsion with this band.

After a week at the top, Hail to the Thief drops to number two on today's chart, overtaken by Evanescence's debut Fallen, up from five.
In the US, where Capitol released it on 10 June, it entered the Billboard 200 at number three on 300,000 copies, behind Luther Vandross and Metallica's St. Anger. That is more than Kid A (207,000) or Amnesiac (231,000) sold in their first American weeks, and Hail to the Thief had been available illegally online for ten weeks before it reached the shops.
