When Nonesuch announced the album in December, after a download on 12 January and a CD on 9 February, the LP was due on 21 April, timed to Record Store Day; it is in the shops a day early instead.
It is Greenwood's fourth score for Paul Thomas Anderson, after There Will Be Blood, The Master and Inherent Vice, all of them on Nonesuch. In March it was up for the Academy Award for Best Original Score and lost to Alexandre Desplat's The Shape of Water.
The score is 18 pieces, recorded in London with a 60-piece string orchestra conducted by Robert Ziegler. The smaller groups, and solo players, work like close-ups
2, Greenwood says. The bigger orchestral things often worked best for drawing you back to see the bigger situation.
