Thom Yorke tells the Berlin crowd about the attacks in America

written up for the archive

Radiohead played the Parkbühne Wuhlheide, an open-air stage in Berlin, in the rain on Tuesday night, hours after the attacks on New York and Washington. After “Pyramid Song” Thom Yorke brought up the planes in America. So who here doesn't know about it? Everybody knows what I'm talking about?1 He told them what he had heard, unsure of the details and checking with the others on stage how many jets there had been. So that's why things are a little bit mute tonight. I'm sorry about that.1 The band went into “Paranoid Android”.

“The National Anthem” ran into “Hunting Bears”, the Amnesiac instrumental the band first played live in Oslo on Sunday, and “Like Spinning Plates”, in the set only since August, opened the first encore.

Later in that encore Yorke gave “You and Whose Army?” for the Bush administration, I guess1. Before the last song he said he was sorry the crowd had had to stand in the rain that day, though people from such a beautiful city were probably used to it. This is hoping that George Bush doesn't declare World War III1, he said, and the band played “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”.
