Radiohead end a sold-out night in the Verona Arena with “Killer Cars”
Radiohead closed their night at the Arena di Verona on Wednesday with a third encore of “Killer Cars”, played acoustic, a song they had not played since Nijmegen in September 2000. It was the only Italian date of the tour, and it had been sold out for several days.
The set ran to 24 songs. Thom Yorke led into “Everything in Its Right Place” with a few lines of Peter Gabriel's “Here Comes the Flood”, and “Fake Plastic Trees”, left out at Paris, Bilbao and Vaison-la-Romaine, opened the first encore for its first outing of the year. The crowd greeted the band with jubilation, L'Unità reports, and the paper's review of Amnesiac, in Italian shops from Friday, calls it a record of rare beauty.
That afternoon BBC Radio 1's Mark and Lard show went out from Verona, with Radiohead playing songs from the new album in a half-hour segment recorded at their hotel. On a tape of the session, Yorke and Colin Greenwood do the talking; Jonny Greenwood, too shy to speak, plays electronic percussion. They talk about having forgotten “The Tourist”, and Yorke plays “Pyramid Song” on his own.
