1, he told the arena, then turned to the other four, grinning, as if waiting to be praised for the joke. They nodded.
Three songs later the night ended on “No Surprises”, the first time it has closed a show on this tour. Every other night so far has ended on “Karma Police”, “Everything in Its Right Place” or “There There”. The last Radiohead show to end on “No Surprises” was at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on 15 May 2006.
The band played in the round, on a circular stage in the middle of the floor, hung with curtains that looked like chain mail and covered with screens on every side. “Planet Telex” opened the night from behind the curtain, and “Kid A”, first played on this tour in Bologna on 17 November, came seventh. Corey duBrowa, reviewing for MAGNET, counts more than 17,000 people in a sold-out arena and a show of about 130 minutes.
Jonny Greenwood's guitar gave trouble in “Ful Stop”, and a technician worked at his pedalboard for a long stretch before he could come back in; Sassan Niasseri, reviewing for Rolling Stone Germany, says the song was dense enough that it barely showed. Phil Selway left the drum kit for “Daydreaming” to play two keyboards set facing each other, one of them, Niasseri notes, there only for him and untouched by anyone else all night. Chris Vatalaro played the extra drums and percussion, as he has all tour, in the place Clive Deamer held on earlier tours.
Ed O'Brien took the solos in “Nude” and “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi”, and in the encore Jonny brought out his antenna radio for “The National Anthem”.
For the third Berlin night running, Niasseri says, “Jigsaw Falling Into Place”, early in the encore, drew the loudest applause and the most dancing, with Colin Greenwood getting the crowd to clap above their heads. He finds some routines creeping in by the third night but still calls the concert wonderful, and asks for the last Berlin show to end on “There There”, as the second night did.
